Ms. Melendez made us to come up with a Utopian society for our 3rd marking period project. Our Utopian society name is Safe Haven which is Environmentally friendly Advance CleanTech Community. If you didn't visit our grand opening, don't worry. I will give you some interesting facts about our community.
Our community is located in the Pacific ocean in an island called PI. The community has a warm and pleasant climate. Government Our system of government is based on monarchy. This means that a group of certain people will make rules for the community. They will allow and not allow certain things as they see fit. If a large group of people gather together and wants a law, the leaders will think and vote on the idea. Employment Coming to this community can also find you a job that you might want. We have jobs such as scientists, teachers, caretakers, computer programmers, doctors, and more. We will try to allow you to have the perfect job for yourself. Benefits In this community you’ll feel extremely safe. You’ll be able to fit right in. In this Community everyone is very well mannered and taught to be hospitable. With the highest medical technology, everyone is free from disease and warfare. You can come to our community for free. Climate The climate is Temperate. The average monthly temperatures range from 14 deg C in January to 22°C in August. Snow is not that common in the wintertime, typically occurring only inland from the coast when present. Temperatures soar to very high readings of 100deg F only on rare occasion. The community has an average 200 sunny days and 120 partly cloudy days a year. Rainfall is strongly concentrated in the cooler half of the year, particularly in the months December through March. The summer months are virtually rainless. There are an average of 45 days with rainfall. Only vehicles that run solar energy could be used for transportation. People can either walk or use bicycles, skateboards, and roller boards to go schools or work. Old and disabled people will be provided with the services that provide ride to them whenever they need. 80% of the people live in cities and live in high rise buildings that use minimum land and are designed to minimize the energy inputs and waste outputs such as CO2, water vapor, and methane. The buildings are surrounded by open spaces with children parks and playgrounds, and ecological preserves with wild animals. Animals Yes, we have animals in our community. Mammals, reptiles, birds, insects, and aquatic animals. These are wild. Only robotic pets are allowed in the houses because all animals must have freedom to live in the wild just like human beings. They should have freedom to live in their own way. Education The children will be taught manners, life skills, sports, robotics, ethics, music, art, and environment. Apart from these, the children will be taught subjects such as science, computational mathematics, social studies, computer programming, language arts, world languages, civics, and history. Everyone in community gets life skills and education for free. The Citizens will pursue the subject of their interest in the school from 8th grade. The school would prepare them with the skills needed for their dream jobs. The people of the community will have skills in various fields so that they can contribute positively to the community. Schools will provide free education and healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner to all the students. The schools will run from 10 am to 6 pm. The curriculum will include mandatory 1 hour gym class and 1 hour life skills class every day. If the student disrupts a class, he or she will be counseled for the first offense. If the student continues to disrupt the class, he or she will be separated from the class and will be assessed for behavioral issues by a school physician. He or she will be tutored separately and the tutors will make him or her understand the importance of obeying the laws. The curriculum in the school will be project based. The children will not have any midterm, final or entrance exams. They will be assessed based on their project work. To amplify their learning, the children will attend one field trip a week and one workshop a month related to the subjects of their interest.

Ms. Melendez, our language arts teacher made us read a book called The Giver. Unlike the book The Animal Farm it is a Utopian Society, which means that everything is perfect. The Giver is about a young boy named Jonas who attended the Ceremony of Twelve. At the age of twelve the children get their job. They attend the job after school. Jonas was selected to be the Receiver of Memory because the other receiver which was a girl failed. Being the Receiver of memory is a painful job because the people in the society don't have feeling. What I mean is that if a family member dies nobody cries or is sad. They are just normal. Jonas gets a lot of pain from the past receiver. He is given the memory of war, sunburn, loneliness, and many more. He was also given happy ones like a sled ride, Christmas, presents, family, and many more. Jonas also saw what release was and when he heard one baby named Gabriel (Gabe) was going to be release he tried to save him. He ran away to Elsewhere and gave away the memories to the community. Now the people in the community can have feelings. Time Magazine! When Ms. Melendez announced that we had a to do time magazine project, I was so happy. I was felt like jumping up and down on my chair, but of course not. I wouldn't. When I saw the time magazines that Ms. Melendez's past students did, it was amazing. When we had to write why we were person of the year for 2036, I knew the right topic to write, but last year one of her students wrote that they were person of the year for inventing a pen that would make corrections on an essay, so I knew that it was close to my idea, so I didn't do it. Then I got another idea. I was person of the year for 2037 because I invented a candy that would clean your teeth and you don't have to go to the dentist anymore. It comes in any flavor and you can save all the money that has to go to the dentist for buying more candies of my invention. You get 100 candies for $10. Yes, I know it is a cheap, but it can help your teeth a lot. I don't care if I don't gain any profit because I only doing this for parents, so they don't have tough time to get their children to brush. They could have a delicious candy to eat in the morning and before going to sleep.
In class we started reading a book called Animal Farm. It is an imaginary place in England that was written by George Orwell.
We did a debate in class about the Star Spangled Banner. We all shouted. To me it sounded like we were at a court trying to agree on something. We had a Pro vs. Con debate. The Pro people were the people who agreed with a man named Colin Kaepernick. He was a strong man who stood up for his own rights. It was said that people have to stand for the national anthem " Star Spangled Banner" sang in all games, but Colin Kaepernick remained seated while it was playing. People said that he was not patriotic. He ignored the people who were shouting at him. Here is an essay I wrote of Pro vs. Con.
Yes, I do agree with the protests seen by major league athletes against the national anthem. Why? Because I do. Well, because of the following reasons. But before I tell you the reasons, I want to tell you who introduced this song and how this national anthem was introduced to sport games. Francis Scott Key introduced the national anthem. Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer, author, and amateur poet from Georgetown who wrote the lyrics to the United States’ national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.” People thought that this national anthem has intense patriotism that swept the nation during World War II (1939-1945). It has remained and performed since 1942. Many other countries do not have the similar rituals. Americans were obsessed in patriotism and pride in identity. Now I will tell you who are some people, I mean players who were in trouble from supporting Colin Kaepernick. Tommie Smith and John Carlos were expelled from the Olympics in Mexico City for raising gloved fists in a "black power.” Their medals were taken away. Muhammoud Abdul-Rauf of the Denver Nuggets was suspended by the NBA in 1996 for refusing to stand during the anthem. After Rio Olympics in summer 2016 Gabby Douglas was scolded harshly on social media for not placing her hand over her heart while the national anthem was playing. Now the reasons. Oh! Forgot Colin Kaepernick, I supported him, of course. he brought awareness to people about police brutality and racial Injustice. Now the reasons. Everyday we have to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and sing the national anthem “Star Spangled Banner.” When it is time to sing The Star Spangled Banner I noticed that most of my classmates including me, just daydream. Next, just by standing and singing the National Anthem doesn't show patriotism. I believe showing that you are patriotic is by voting and writing social commentary. Why voting? Voting is also display of patriotism, and it is also considered a civil duty to help maintain or change government. Also, I believe that if you are competing with in the US. then we shouldn't stand or sing the national anthem. Oh, I believe in the Olympics. He is a stellar writer by using suspense and keeping readers hooked to the story. There was one part in the story that made me suspicious of the person. How? Well... when the person kept saying "TRUE! --nervous --very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses --not destroyed --not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? Hearken! and observe how healthily --how calmly I can tell you the whole story. It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night. Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture --a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees --very gradually --I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever. Now this is the point. You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded --with what caution --with what foresight --with what dissimulation I went to work!" (textual evidence) Oh! I was so terrified after reading a story called THE TELL TALE HEART by Edgar Allan Poe. He is a stellar writer by using suspense and keeping readers hooked to the story. There was one part in the story that made me suspicious of the person. How? Well... when the person kept saying (textual evidence) "TRUE! --nervous --very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses --not destroyed --not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. The story had so much suspense that made me make many inferences while reading. I took a test based on the story THE TELL TALE HEART. I know I got a decent grade. But it doesn't really matter to what I got. |
